Summary

Several authors have established that different indices, which characterize oceanic and atmospheric phenomena overseas, are related to the behavior of weather and climate in the Colombian Andean region. However, the application of this knowledge is almost null and basically associated with two situations: The first is the uncertainty represented by the scarce amount of existing meteorological information, to explain events or low periodicity climatic anomalies; the second is the established conception that the El Niño Oceanic Index (ONI) is the only index capable of describing the values variation of the climate elements on a monthly scale. In this seminar, the results of three pieces of research that evaluate the effect of different indices on rainfall in the Colombian coffee zone, which seek to reduce the aforementioned uncertainties and determine their spatio-temporal suitability as climate modulators, will be presented.
