Summary

We show that the embryogenic capacity of coffee (Coffea arabica) depends on genotype and is fixed by generations F3 or F4. Therefore, F5 embryogenic capacity can be predicted by evaluating F3 or F4 ancestors. Somatic embryogenesis regeneration was evaluated in C. arabica cv. Caturra x Timor Hybrid crosses. Embryogenic capacity varied between 4.8 to 72.7%, influenced by pedigree, leaf collection month, and genotype-month interaction. These findings aid breeding and tissue culture, enabling prediction of embryogenic capacity and faster program advancement.
