Summary

This seminar presents the strategies that should be incorporated at the coffee-farm scale to carry out an integral management of the water resource. The first strategy recommended is the adoption of a Program for the Efficient Use and Saving of Water (PUEAA), both for the water used at home and for the water used to process coffee, through behavioral practices, engineering practices and the adoption of the ecological process of coffee. This first strategy allows reducing water consumption on the farm and, therefore, the volumes of wastewater generated. The second strategy consists of selecting an appropriate treatment for the wastewater generated on the farm, considering aspects such as: the environmental and water supply of the area, the availability of physical and economic resources and the applicable regulations at the regional and national level. For this case, through the seminar, the current environmental regulations that apply to discharges to surface water bodies, to the ground and for the reuse of treated water as well as the technical aspects and purification efficiencies in the application of physical, chemical and biological treatments to the wastewater generated in the coffee farm are presented. The use of septic systems for homes wastewater treatment, and the use of modular anaerobic treatment systems, biodigesters, chemical treatments and the use of plant extracts for coffee wastewater treatment are described. Finally, treatments that allow reaching the goal of zero discharges, such as: the use of greenhousetype pulp processors with complete recirculation of leachates, the use of green filters with complete recirculation of drains, and solar and mechanical dehydration are detailed.
