Summary

Severe water erosion due to the lack of soil protection affects coffee production between 51% and 60%. Weeds management is key to coffee cultivation productivity, competitiveness and sustainability. High interference weeds can reduce production by more than 66%, while their integrated management with the establishment of noble weeds does not affect production, it responds to 13% of production costs and reduces soil losses due to erosion between 55% and to 97%. This seminar presents the most important and current research results of Cenicafé in the area of weed management in coffee production systems, where greater emphasis is placed on: 1) timely integration of management methods (manual, mechanical, chemical and cultural), 2) weeds recognition according to their degree of interference (high, medium, low) with coffee as the first step to carry out the integrated management and selection of noble weeds, 3) control of weeds before their flowering stage to achieve greater effectiveness and efficiency, 4) rational and measured use of chemical herbicides applied in foci and without leaving the soil free of cover, 5) preventive management of the resistance of weeds to herbicides and 6) use of sustainable technologies such as the weed selector and back spray equipment under technical recommendations.
