Summary

Well-nourished coffee plantations produce more and their quality is superior to those with poor nutrition. This presentation answers the following questions: What organs of the plant are necessary to produce coffee? What organs of the plant require nutrients for their growth? What amount of nutrients does a coffee crop extract from soil? How long does it take to get a harvest? What is the time of greatest demand for nutrients by the berries? What is pursued with fertilization? How much does production decrease if crops are not fertilized? What coffee nutrition plan can be used in the growing stage? What coffee nutrition plan can be used in the production stage? What fertilizers are suitable for coffee? What are the economic aspects to consider when buying fertilizers? How much fertilizer is needed to supply 300 kg ha-year-1 of nitrogen and how much does it cost? What are the first indicators to define the times of fertilization? Where and how should fertilizers be applied? Finally, and based on the results of 1,500 soil analyses, a diagnosis of the fertility of the soils of the coffee zone of Norte de Santander is made. The results also show 70% of the cases show acidic conditions for coffee, 50% high aluminum content, 80% low organic matter and nitrogen levels, 50% low phosphorus content, 35% deficient in calcium and 45% low magnesium levels.
