Resumo

Nos programas de melhoramento vegetal, os objetivos são diversos, incluindo o desenvolvimento de genótipos altamente produtivos, com ampla adaptabilidade e resistência genética a patógenos que são limitantes para a cultura. No caso de resistência a doenças, é relativamente fácil de conseguir quando as fontes gênicas estão disponíveis e sua expressão é monógeno-dominante. Neste caso, variedades com resistência genética vertical podem ser obtidas; no entanto, este tipo de resistência pode ser rapidamente superado por patologias compatíveis e, quando isto acontece, deve-se recorrer a uma mudança de estratégia, a fim de garantir que a resistência das plantas a patógenos dure ao longo do tempo e sua durabilidade seja alcançada através do uso de resistência genética horizontal ou quantitativa. Este tipo de resistência só estará presente em variedades com diversidade genética, um fator condicionante que as torna mais capazes de enfrentar futuros fatores de risco. Nesta revisão, uma compilação de conceitos gerais, fatores que afetam a resistência e os avanços feitos na compreensão da resistência genética horizontal de Coffea arabica L. e Coffea canephora Pierre ex Froehner.
