Summary

This document identifies the potentialities of the Colombian coffee sector as an enabling environment for the provision of ecosystem services. To the extent that conservation actions integrated with the production system, services such as micro-watershed protection, carbon capture, conservation of biodiversity and soils, landscape beauty, pollination and nutrient fixation can be provided. An optimal mechanism to integrate this type of actions is the implementation of Payments for Environmental Services - PES schemes, as a voluntary compensation instrument between the parties interested in environmental conservation.  For each type of  Environmental  Service, projects executed under PES schemes or similar are described in the Colombian coffee region such as the Coffee Cultural Landscape PCC®, payments for water environmental services -PWES-, carbon capture and specialty coffee programs. These programs serve as mechanisms to encourage a sustainable production from an economic, social and environmental perspective.
