In plant genetic breeding programs, the objectives are diverse, among them, to develop highly productive genotypes, with wide adaptability and with genetic resistance to limiting pathogens for the crop. In the case of resistance to diseases, it is relatively easy to achieve when there are sources of genes and their expression is monogenic–dominant. In this case, varieties with vertical type genetic resistance can be obtained. However, this type of resistance can quickly be overcome by compatible pathogens and when this happens, a change in strategy must be resorted to in order to ensure that plant resistance to pathogens lasts over time and its durability is achieved through the use of horizontal or quantitative genetic resistance. This type of resistance will only be present in varieties with genetic diversity, a determining factor that makes them more suitable to face future risk factors. In this review, a compilation of general concepts, factors that affect resistance and
advances made in the understanding of horizontal-type genetic resistance of Coffea arabica L. and Coffea canephora Pierre ex Froehner are made.
